Beyond the Screen: Why Live Teaching Still Matters in the Age of Over-Digitalisation
The Invisible Shift We Haven't Questioned
We live in an era where technology has transitioned from a tool to an inevitable fixture. A calculator is now the default for arithmetic, so much so that mental calculation provokes surprise, even amusement. We no longer question this shift; we simply accept it as progress. Yet beneath this acceptance lies a troubling reality: we have lost something valuable in the process. We have exchanged the intellectual engagement of problem-solving for the convenience of automation, trading the beauty of human effort for the speed of algorithmic efficiency.
This phenomenon extends far beyond arithmetic. It pervades our institutions, reshapes our practices, and redefines our expectations of what teaching and learning should be. And nowhere is this more evident, or more consequential, than in higher education.
The Evolution of the Lecture Hall: Progress or Displacement?
Consider the trajectory of the modern lecture hall. The dry-erase marker and board were once the standard. Then came the projector, which promised greater visual engagement. During COVID-19, screen sharing replaced even that, further distancing the lecturer from the live act of creation.
Yet here lies the fundamental misunderstanding about educational technology: not all technological change represents progress.
The projector and screen sharing are not natural evolutions of the whiteboard method. They represent something closer to the old model of lecturers reading from pre-written texts, a passive transmission of information from screen to mind, rather than an active construction of knowledge in real time.
True technological advancement looks different. It enhances the core pedagogical function without replacing it. The smart board and tablet connected to a screen exemplify this principle: they preserve the essential elements of live writing while reducing waste and expanding capability. They are technology in service of teaching, not technology displacing it.
What Made the Difference: Three Essential Elements
The most memorable lectures of my educational journey shared a striking commonality: they combined three essential elements.
First, a teaching method rooted in live creation. Whether Dr Mugahid A. Salih Mohamed Khair illuminating the complexities of neck anatomy, Professor Ammar Al-Tahir guiding us through respiratory physiology in the third semester, or Dr Abdulaziz commanding the intricacies of bacteriology, each deployed the marker and board as an active instrument. The lecturer did not simply display information; they constructed understanding in real time, step by step, before our eyes.
Second, profound mastery of the subject matter. These educators possessed such command of their disciplines that they could think on their feet, respond to questions spontaneously, and adapt their explanations to our confusion. The board became a mirror of their thought process—and watching that process unfold was profoundly educational.
Third, genuine human interaction. The classroom was not a passive cinema but a space of dialogue, questioning, and collective discovery. The lecturer could read the room, adjust the pace, and meet students where they stood intellectually. This responsiveness—this human element—cannot be replicated by a pre-recorded presentation or a static slide deck.
The Gold Standard: When Technology Serves Pedagogy
Among all these experiences, the finest were the Infectious Diseases Modelling lectures by Professor Nimalan Arinaminpathy during my Master's degree. Here was a masterclass in what thoughtful technological integration looks like. He transitioned from using paper to writing directly on a tablet connected to the screen, a subtle shift that preserved every pedagogical strength of the traditional method while eliminating paper waste in line with environmental sustainability. The technology was invisible; it served the teaching, not the other way around.
The Information Retention Paradox
There is something almost forgotten now: the passage of time in these lectures was imperceptible. Hours compressed into moments. Why? Because our minds were actively engaged in the act of sense-making, not passively receiving information.
When a lecturer writes on a board, the speed is calibrated to human understanding. We have time to process, to question internally, to build mental models. The transience of the written word on an erasable surface creates an implicit hierarchy of importance; the lecturer must choose what stays, what goes, what matters most.
Contrast this with a presentation file containing dozens of slides, each dense with text and images. The information is complete, comprehensive, and utterly overwhelming. We scroll, we skip, we miss the narrative thread. Our minds are taxed not by synthesis but by filtration.
The irony is profound: in pursuit of clearer, more complete information delivery, we have made learning harder.
A Call to Reclaim Active Learning
This is not a Luddite's plea to abandon technology entirely. It is a call to fundamentally reframe our relationship with it.
Technology should be a supportive tool, not a substitute. In education, this means:
- Preserving live creation in teaching, whether through the traditional board or through tablets and smart boards that maintain the immediacy of human thought
- Prioritising direct interaction over mediated learning, even when that requires more preparation and carries greater vulnerability
- Questioning assumptions about what "modern" or "efficient" teaching looks like
- Investing in human mastery as the foundation of education, with technology amplifying rather than replacing that mastery
The age of over-digitalisation is not an inevitable future; it is a choice we continue to make, moment by moment, classroom by classroom. We can choose differently.
Choosing Purpose: Intentionality Over Innovation
The path forward does not require rejecting technology. It requires rejecting the false equation between technological sophistication and pedagogical effectiveness. The smartest board in the world is useless if the lecturer lacks mastery or presence. Conversely, the most elegant tablet integration is worthless if it merely replicates the ineffective delivery of a standard presentation.
What we need is a renaissance of intentionality in education, a deliberate examination of what we teach and how, grounded in evidence about what actually works to embed knowledge in the human mind. We need educators willing to embrace vulnerability, to think on their feet, to adapt in real time. And we need institutions willing to support this approach, resisting the seductive narrative that progress always means more technology.
In my own work, I aspire to this standard. I hope that across higher education and across all fields touched by over-digitalisation, we might collectively pause, reflect, and reclaim what is genuinely valuable in human effort, active engagement, and the irreplaceable power of direct human connection.
A Choice, Not an Inevitability
The calculator will likely remain the norm. But in our classrooms, our boardrooms, and our spaces of learning, we can still choose to write, to think, and to teach the way that best honours both the beauty of the human mind and the potential of technology to serve it.
That is the future worth pursuing.
